This fast low-budget installation was commissioned for the Neocon presentation at Chicago’s Merchandise Mart. To bring some warmth and humor into an austere white space, we suggested to simply “draw” the new showroom on the walls, windows, and floors of the old one. Eventually, the drawings were produced as computer output on black adhesive vinyl, and applied directly to the room’s surfaces. A collection of colorful chairs on display appeared as if inside of a three dimensional black-and-white drawing.
The full effect of Vitra showroom design could only be appreciated in the context of other Neocon presentations. On the background of serious, self -gratifying, and expensive interiors, this playful environment stood out in every possible respect, thus attracting a lot of customers’ attention.
