Times Tower was the quintessential building of the Millennium celebration. More than a billion people around the world tuned in to watch this building on New Year’s Eve. The miniature tower was intended to be a permanent keepsake of “being there”.
We decided to commemorate not one, but three Times Towers. The story of this remarkable building curiously mirrors cultural history of the Twentieth Century itself. Thus, the original neoclassical tower, built for the New York Times in 1904, was re-clad in a thin modernist shell in 1965. The renovated building, strikingly out of place in its colorful Times Square surrounding, has gradually evolved to it’s present billboard - covered look, to become one of New York City’s symbols.
