From the outset, Cooper Hewitt Museum asked to focus the souvenir program on the image of the museum’s building, the historical Carnegie Mansion. Victorian architecture of the mansion has been a difficult fit with the language of contemporary design. To that end, we’ve rendered the building façade as a giant digital emoticon, entirely out of keyboard symbols and punctuation marks.
This graphic treatment brings the language of the 19thcentury building straight into the twenty-first century, closer to sensibility of the young generation of museum visitors. The flexible graphic icon can assume many different mutations and updates, depending on the fonts used.
